Walking Adventures International (WAI) is a family-owned travel planner and tour operator offering travel programs on all 7 continents.

They have offered walking tours as the optimal way to connect with the world since 1989.

George Friesen, a high school history and foreign language teacher, began organizing and directing tours to Europe fifty years ago.

In 1989, he started his tours by combining motorcoach sightseeing blended with two to four hour walks.

This concept grew in popularity, and in 1992, his son Dan, current owner of WAI, joined George to help expand the WAI travel philosophy to new areas of the planet.

Destinations

They have tours based on all 7 continents, with over 60 different destinations worldwide.

WAI offers 15 different destinations on average per year, featuring a different rotation of destinations each year.

The Walks

Most walks are planned by the WAI staff.

They often partner with local walking clubs to share the trails, providing the added dimension of walking with local, everyday citizens from the host country.

• Distance: Their walk routes vary greatly in length, from 2 kilometers (about 1.5 miles) to 12 kilometers (about 7.5 miles). Terrain, setting, and points of interest will determine walk distance. Walks on a given day are often conducted in segments; for example, walk 4 kilometers in one setting and 5 kilometers in another. This approach tends to add diversity and increase the quality of the route.
• Walk Pace: The average pace is about 3 kilometers (2 miles) per hour, assuming it’s a venue that does not involve commentary by our guide.  The walks are at a relaxed but steady pace, and allowing time for commentary by the guide, picture-taking, or bathroom stops. 
• Difficulty of the walks: The walks vary from very small hills and little stair climbing to many steep hills with an elevation over 3500 ft. The terrain varies from almost entirely on pavement to more difficult terrain. Each tour will have different difficulty levels to choose from.
• Guides: Most walks in international destinations are conducted as guided walks. Generally one WAI guide will be the lead guide, along with a local guide, and a second WAI guide will be at the back of the group.
